The Art of Layering Your Skincare

The Art of Layering Your Skincare

Gels, creams, oils and serums: Navigating the basics of how to layer skincare products can be tricky to decode. By applying your skincare products in the proper order, you'll increase their efficacy and ensure that your skin receives the full benefits of each product yielding a better complexion and a healthier glow. After cleansing and toning your face, keep this guideline in mind.

Always apply light to heavy.
A good rule of thumb is to apply your products from thinnest to heaviest in consistency . Start with a good serum designed for your skin needs. Why? Whether your goal is to smooth, firm or protect these active ingredient powerhouse products serve as the perfect primer for layering because they tend to be light in texture and also penetrate deeply into the skin to hydrate and deliver active ingredients.
Use serum every morning and/or evening.

Try a Face Oil.
These brilliant multi-tasking skincare boosters replenish the skin's barrier function with essential fatty acids and lock in moisture. A few drops can give skin a dewy, hydrated and healthy-looking glow. Use in place of a cream or moisturizer, or apply all over face for extra hydration.
Use a face oil every morning and/or evening.

Take a break.
Allow products to sink in for at least 30-60 seconds before applying your next product giving your skin adequate time to fully absorb each formula and to prevent pilling.

Seal the deal.
A great moisturizer is essential to any skincare layering routine because it will seal in all of your other products. Smooth moisturizer onto your skin to protect from environmental aggressors and to keep the surface smooth and supple.
Moisturize every morning and evening.

Finish with an SPF.
If there's one piece of beauty advice our mothers taught us, it's this: never skip the SPF. It's the first anti-aging product anyone should start with and will act as a barrier against the sun's harmful rays. Sunscreen or products containing SPF should go one after you've completed the other steps in your routine and right before you apply makeup.
Apply sunscreen every morning and throughout the day when outside.
